The Ancient Indian Chai Ingredients
Spiced tea, or as the Hindi would say, Chai, originated more than 5000 years ago in ancient royal India. This inspiring drink has been cherished for centuries and was served as a healing Ayurvedic beverage. The love for traditional Indian Chai has inspired us at Lovechock to combine the power of cacao from South America with the aromatic Indian spices: cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, clove, nutmeg and black pepper. In the olden days, chai tea was frequently consumed with a dash of buffalo milk. These days, we think it is better to keep the buffalo milk for the buffalo babies. At Lovechock we use an all-natural, fully plant-based hazelnut cream to give our Indian Chai its amazing creamy texture.
Spice up your Health
The traditional use of the Chai spices did not only lend flavoursome notes to the brew but also infused the beverage with their health-promoting features. Indian Chai spices are said to increase peace of mind as well as to preserve heart health. Although, to preserve heart health you shouldn’t consume high amounts of sugars. So we’ve used just a small amount (13 grams per tablet) of coconut blossom nectar in our chocolate. That’s almost 3 times less sugar than a tall Chai Latte from Starbucks! At Lovechock we only spice it up with loving aromas to stay true to the roots.
Speaking of roots, cinnamon trees are native to Southeast Asia where the aromatic spice was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was regarded as a gift for monarchs and even a god. It was also used as a medicine to treat colds and reduce high blood sugar levels, one of the key risk factors for heart disease. Cardamom, together with black pepper, has been traded in India for at least 1000 years. Cardamom plants grow in the monsoon forests of the Western Ghats in southern India. Many historical Indian texts mention cardamom as a flavouring and also as a medicine for high blood pressure.
